University of Bolton School of Art Psychogeography Project

January – May 2015

https://aad4004.wordpress.com/

aad4004psychogeography

Based around the theme of ‘Psychogeography,’ the project encourages students to research various philosophical, political and cultural standpoints in relation to their own sense of place. Participants immerse themselves in literature, film and visual arts that address the navigation of urban spaces. Students devise independent strategies, flaneurship, and indulge in the ‘eternally fashionable practice of walking around cities and suburbs as a kind of subversive act.’ (The Guardian, 2008)

This blog is a culmination of ideas and images produced in response to the concept of ‘psychogeography’ and showcases the diverse and creative visions from this group of students.

Lecturers:

Mark Adams: Lecturer in Photography & 1st year tutor

Ian Beesley: Senior Lecturer in Photography

Peter Lewis: Senior Lecturer in Fine Art

University of Bolton student photography show at the Bradford Industrial Museum

STUDENTS from the University of Bolton have been capturing images of Bradford for future generations.

2nd year students visited Bradford Industrial Museum to learn about the work that goes into dating photographs, and were tasked with capturing their own. They were challenged to imagine a viewer 50 or 100 years into the future and take photographs of Bradford that they felt reflected the city centre in 2014.

University of Bolton, School of Art: Psychogeography study Visit to the Northern Quarter, Manchester

February 2013

University of Bolton study visit to Manchester’s Northern Quarter on a very cold day in February. This visit formed an integral part of the Applied Creativity module and its predominant theme of Psychogeography, examining urban spaces. This is a project I wrote as a means for students to develop an awareness of their environment through engaging with a range of media. The project encourages students to research various philosophical, political, cultural standpoints in relation to their own sense of place while immersing themselves in literature, film and visual arts that may have previously eluded them. Artist and writers such as Will Self, Guy Debord, Patrick Keiller and Ian Sinclair are all inspirational in this field of study.
